A Database can be as simple as a grocery list that everyone in the house can fill out throughout the week and you look up on your web phone at the grocery store deleting items as you pick them up. I actually have one of these, there great!
Some databases get into complex queries across hundreds of tables. My carlots.com database is web driven and has run five of my stores at once with a very high degree of functionality. all my sale forms are filled out dynamically as well as my payment information. The public web surfer has access to only the inventory but the same table is used to inventory the business. The vehicle table, customer table, test drive table, and sale table combine to create the sale contract. The field "status" provides a list of active finance customers, and the finance table takes payments and provides the customer with balance and payment information as well as a record of all payments made by date and time. Data is passed on to other databases and search engines by "url parameters" so you can have a table with information and then create a page with links to map quest, zillow, zabasearch, etc. There are so many ways to use a properly configured database. By the way no sensitive information is viewable on my site by anyone who is not a password authorized user.
A small relational data driven site (like a product catalog) with the capability for you to log in and add or delete products runs from about $1750 and up. This is a good option for the business that wants to allow their visitors to see everything that is in the "store" from the comfort of their own home. This is almost a necessity when products, services, and or prices change regularly.
A complex multipurpose database like my carlots.com described above requires hundreds of hours to create and deploy and pricing will depend on the complexity of the job. There are ways to quickly create internet functionality on your existing database and that would cost a lot less than deploying a system from scratch.
